Dumbarton Burns Club Bowling Match

DBM14

Dumbarton Burns Club was the host for the annual grudge match in 2014.  13 intrepid bowlers left Brooms Road Car Park after a delay caused by showmen’s vehicles arriving for the September Fair.  Travelling by luxury minibus, members arrived at the plush premises of Dumbarton Bowling Club and were warmly welcomed by President George Dunwoody and his members.  After being marshalled into teams and skips, bowling commenced at 1.30pm in glorious sunny weather on the manicured greens. Play was occasionally punctuated by cries of “shot” or “wrang bias” and several adjournments made to the bar for team talks.  Ken Crookshanks, Frank Manson and Gordon McKerrow distinguished themselves with displays of skill of a high order but were up against some professional bowlers from Dumbarton including Gavin Findlay, winner of the Howff Club’s “Draffan Cup” last month.

A bell at 4.00pm summoned the boolers to the clubhouse and after some heated discussion between the team “captains”, it was decided that both teams were the winners this year and all repaired upstairs for a steak pie feed followed by a succulent cheese board.

President George Dunwoody presented John Clark with a box, at first thought to keep his paints in but investigation revealed the winners’ “Quaich” and John handed over the runners up trophy, the jack on a polished base. John thanked George and Dumbarton Burns Club for their generous hospitality. He presented a bottle of the club’s 125th Anniversary Whisky and it was resolved to meet again in Dumfries in 2015 when it would be a very different outcome.

Great day out amongst friends.
